Against the Wind, a Love Story

Set in the Old West

A Love Story Written by Willow Windsong

Jenny directed an indiscreet gaze over Dan St. Johns' tall, lean form. She'd fallen in love with the cowboy on her fifteenth birthday.

Sixteen years had passed and at this point she realized that any hope involving Dan and an intimate relationship was a useless effort. It was best to move on now rather than stick around for his impending wedding to socialite Arianna Thomas.

Jenny switched her gaze to the magnificent black stallion, rubbing the white star centered in his forehead. Big Jack had always enjoyed her massaging him there.

Before she completely lost her nerve, she told Dan, "I wanted to let you know that I'll be leaving Doctor Owen's employment and heading to Seven Hills, Texas. Soon," she tacked on as an afterthought.

"But-but Owens is set for retirement. I assumed that he'd be offering you the chance to take over," Dan countered, feeling as if he'd just lost his best friend while acquiring a case of the stammers.

He couldn't even remember when Jenny hadn't been in his life. She was indeed, his best friend.

"He did make the offer - but I declined. I want to carve my own path," Jenny explained, turning and looking into the distant hills as the sun was starting to slip below the horizon. "Like you did - with the ranch."

"I don't know how to respond, Jenny. Obviously, my heart is broken. I can't imagine you - not in my life."

Dan was aware that he was sounding desperate - but in fact, he was exactly that.
